When it comes to broadband speed, there are more moaning than cheers in Ireland; Eircom, UPC, Digiweb, Vodafone or the 3G carriers, all are promising light speeds and offer mediocre connections in reality.

And, not surprisingly, the truth is on the consumer side. Speedtest.net is placing Ireland on the 49th position on download speed and on the 67th on the upload.

The top is dominated on both upload-download by South Korea, followed by countries like Lithuania, Latvia, Romania or Alan Islands.

The top speeds are 32.15 Mb/s for download and 19.12 Mb/s for upload, where for Ireland the average is 5.87 Mb/s and 1.05 Mb/s respectively.

Google Search introduce new SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) feature. The Secured channel can be used by entering https://www.google.com on the browser address box instead of http://www.google.com every time you perform a search. Note that as other products from Google as Maps and Images aren't ready yet for secure search, those options will be missing from the page.
SSL protocol will encrypt the communication between your PC and Internet, but only at the search results page; once you click on a result link you'll be driven away from a secure connection if the website you visit isn't providing a https feature.
The use of SSL may slightly slow down your browsing experience because of extra time necessary for secure the connection.
